It’s interesting when your friends have children. When your friends get married, well, they’ve been dating, you could see it coming, they eased into it. Well, when your friends have children, one day they’re not parents, then the next day they are. There’s no easing into anything.
I first met Rob via Flickr, in 2007. He was looking for an assistant for weddings, and I’d never photographed a wedding in my life. I think since then we’ve photographed close to 20 weddings together, all over New England. I can’t begin to recount everything I’ve learned from Rob, as it’s not a brief list, but I will say he is easily the most technically proficient photographer I’ve worked with. Not only does Rob understand light, but he can explain it.
When Rob first told me that he and Nicole were expecting, I’d just departed for spring training last March, and I still remember how excited and proud he was on the phone. Just a little more than two-weeks ago, Rob and Nicole were joined by Oliver Fox Brown. A few images from our first meeting Saturday.

Toward the end of the shoot, Nicole joined us for a bit.

As we wrapped things up, Oliver was transfixed, staring at my softbox and the repeated blinking of the flash. Which is good, because I have a feeling this wasn’t the the last he’ll see of that flashing light…

Thanks Doug! These are incredible! Whole family LOVES them. They really capture all our expressions so well – even Oliver who at only 2 weeks hasn’t got too many to offer. You even managed to not make my English teeth not look too bad either. Sweet! I’ve been covering him for a couple of weeks now, but having me in the shot is priceless.
What can I say, it has been a lot of fun shooting weddings with you. I can’t really believe how quickly you picked up everything (not my bags). And of course thank you for telling guests the accent is from Revere – some people actually believe you!
I’ll be repeating this session for you some day.
Good job I responded to that flickr mail eh?
(That softbox is brilliant – I want one… oh and CLS on Canon too.)
Really great work Doug! Of course, I don’t have to tell you Rob how much you’ll treasure these images in just a few short years. I can’t believe how expressive and alert Oliver is at just two weeks old.
That softbox does totally rock, used it again this morning, it’s yours whenever you need it. And wait, you’re not from Revere? (blog readers, literally at every wedding I tell the couple, “Don’t let his accent fool you, it’s fake, he was born in Revere.” Can’t wait to shoot you and Ollie again.
You’re so lucky Doug that you got to meet Mr. Oliver Fox Brown…the baby who has the coolest name!! I love that he is so so expressive in all of them!
I was searching for digital photography when I found your site. Very good post. Thank You.
